Search filter · part of Parentech

They heard the word at school. Tonight they'll Google it.

SafeSearch blurs the worst pictures. It does not stop the search, and the results page is where the damage is done, not the images three clicks in. A ten-year-old with a word and a search bar is going to use both.

What happens instead

Give Parentech the words. A search that contains one of them never runs. Not filtered, not blurred: the results page does not exist, on Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Brave, Ecosia, Startpage, Yandex, and inside YouTube's own search box. Your kid sees a wall with the word on it. Paste the whole list at once, and add to it from your phone when you hear the next one.

Exactly what it does

  • Matches the word anywhere in the search, in any letter case. "prank" catches "best pranks ever" and "PRANK".
  • Matches phrases only when the words appear together, so "free robux" does not block "free".
  • Stops the search on the way to the results page, so nothing loads at all.
  • Covers searches typed into YouTube's own search box, which never leave the YouTube page.
  • Takes a pasted list, separated by commas or new lines, and reports how many were new.

Setting it up

Three steps.

  1. 1

Open the Search filter section in Parentech, or on parentech.app from your phone.

  2. 2

Type a word, or paste a list. Each one is blocked the moment it is added.

  3. 3

When a word should be allowed for a while, enter your PIN on the blocked page and choose 15 minutes or an hour.

What it will not do

Said plainly.

  • It works on the search engines listed. A search box inside another site, such as a shopping site, is not covered.
  • It matches words, not meaning. A misspelling the child invents will get past it, so add the spellings you have seen.
  • It does not log searches. It only stops the ones that contain your words.

Questions parents ask

Before you install.

Is this the same as Google SafeSearch?
No, and it works alongside it. SafeSearch filters what appears in results. Parentech stops the search itself when it contains a word you chose, on every major search engine and on YouTube.
How many words can I add?
Up to 200, and you can paste them all at once.
Does it block the word inside a website's own search?
It covers Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Brave, Ecosia, Startpage, Yandex and YouTube. Other sites' internal search boxes are not covered.
What does my child see?
A page saying the search is blocked, with the word it matched, and a note to ask a parent.
